Red Sea Film Festival postponed to late 2027

The sixth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival has been postponed until the fourth quarter of 2027, the Red Sea Film Foundation announced.

The event had been scheduled to take place in December in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The foundation attributed the decision to the timing and logistical requirements involved in staging an international event of the festival’s scale.

The foundation did not link the postponement to the region’s security situation. No specific date within the fourth quarter of 2027 was provided.

Regional security concerns

The announcement comes as Saudi Arabia faces heightened regional tensions, including missile and drone attacks by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The continuing hostilities have increased concerns about security along the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key international shipping route off Yemen’s coast.

However, the foundation’s explanation for the festival’s postponement focused on timing and logistics rather than security.

Year-round programmes to continue

The foundation said the festival’s year-round initiatives will continue. These include the Red Sea Fund and Red Sea Labs, programmes associated with the festival’s wider support for film activity.

It also plans to begin programming at Culture Square in Historic Jeddah in November. No further details about that programming were provided.

The Red Sea International Film Festival is one of Saudi Arabia’s prominent international cultural events, bringing filmmakers, actors and other film-industry figures from around the world to Jeddah.
